Spreadsheet Methods (Excel) - 5N1977

The aim of this award is to provide the Learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use a spreadsheet software application to create and modify spreadsheets using spreadsheet features and functions in an efficient and accurate manner.  On completion of this module, the learner will gain a thorough working knowledge of a spreadsheet application package, through developing good work practices and through the use of ancillary equipment and resources, such as a printer and materials, to produce professional worksheets and workbooks to a professional standard.

What will I learn?
  1. Facilitate the Learner to investigate a range of common uses for spreadsheets.

  2. Learner explains the term spreadsheet and explores different uses for spreadsheets and why you would choose a spreadsheet over other software applications.

  3. List applications suitable for creating a spreadsheet.

  4. Explore key spreadsheet elements including cells, cell references, numeric, alpha, and alphanumeric data, formulae, functions, graphs and macros.

  5. Learner to explain the terms, spreadsheet, row, column cell, cell reference, label, value, formula, formula bar, name box, and autofill.

  6. Learner understands how and why to input different cell types: numeric, characters and alphanumeric data.

  7. Use of formula for summation, addition, dividing and multiplying.

  8. Copy formula across a range of cells using relative and absolute cell references.

  9. Explore the use of autofill, graphs and macros.

  10. Create a chart from specified cell ranges and insert titles and axis labels.

  11. Demonstrate common spreadsheet usability features to include use of toolbars, window management, sorting and filtering.

  12. Demonstrate opening, saving and closing spreadsheets.

  13. Viewing spreadsheets by freezing panes, arranging windows and switching from one window to another.

  14. Using edit functions and explore the sorting facility, including custom sort.

  15. Create a data filter on one or more columns, to include text, numbers, colour, incorporating the use of equals, less than, and greater than.

  16. Use alignment features in cells, including wrap text and merge and centre.

  17. Save a spreadsheet to a specified drive/folder.

  18. Use spreadsheet design features involving data and cell formatting techniques which enhance understanding and legibility.

  19. Create a new spreadsheet, open, edit, insert new rows and columns and delete unwanted rows and columns.

  20. Enter specified data into a spreadsheet.

  21. Explore toolbar design features to include inserting and deleting columns and rows, and adjusting column width.

  22. Format data to include decimal, date, currency, percentage.

  23. Enhance the display of cells using font enhancement features including borders and fill colour.

  24. Adjust the width and height of rows and columns as required to display data appropriately.

  25. Automate routine multi-step tasks through the creation, execution, and management of simple macros.

  26. Create and execute simple automated macros with specified commands.

  27. Print complete or partial sections of a spreadsheet, formatted fit for presentation.

  28. Print an entire workbook, active sheet and selection on a sheet.

  29. Use advanced spreadsheet features including absolute and relative cell references, conditional IF statements, statistical, financial, and date and time functions.

  30. Perform calculations using formulae containing both absolute and relative cell references.

  31. Perform calculations using statistical functions such as AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, MEDIAN, COUNTA, COUNTIF.

  32. Use conditional IF statements, using logical operators AND, OR, NOT.

  33. Perform calculations using financial functions DEPRECIATION, and/or NPV and/or PMT.

  34. Perform calculations using date and time functions.

  35. Generate a variety of types of graphs, with appropriate titles and labels, from spreadsheet data.

  36. Create at least two different graph types – bar chart and pie chart.

  37. Produce a spreadsheet, with minimal supervision, that meets a simple design specification and is fit for purpose.

  38. Create a design specification for a spreadsheet including data input and format, data processing, data output and formatting.

  39. Demonstrate personal initiative and resourcefulness in editing and amending spreadsheets to ensure they are fit for purpose.

  40. Create a spreadsheet with a specific purpose from a design specification demonstrating editing and amending skills to ensure spreadsheet is fit for the purpose it was designed.

  • Classroom-based, face-to-face 'Live Tutor instruction/in a classroom/and online class environment.

  • Workplace learning.

  • Blended learning (hybrid model where a portion of learning is classroom-based and a portion of which is online learning.   

  • Tutor support available between classes (online, face-to-face, or by telephone).

Entry requirements

QQI Level 4 Certificate, or equivalent life/work experience.  A copy of your current Curriculum Vitae or certificate.  It is expected that you will have a range of learning styles, strengths and needs related to the programme and have the capacity to take responsibility for your own learning within the managed classroom and online environment, provided by Lir Business Services & Training Centre.

Learners must reside in Ireland.  This course is delivered through English.  A competency test may be carried out for English language and literacy and/or computer skills to ensure that you have the skills necessary to complete the programme.

The following English language proficiency tests and results are acceptable :

IELTS Indicator Test The minimum score is 6 unless otherwise stated.

TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition The minimum score is 92 unless otherwise stated.

Duolingo English Test The minimum score required is 95 unless stated otherwise.

Exam English If you are unsure of your current level, you can take a free test on sites such as this one.

IT/Computer Skills: sufficient working knowlege of computers.  Learner must have access to a PC, laptop or mobile device with internet access, Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later, a browser with the latest version of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox or Safari, Adobe Reader to view PDFs.  Your device must have a working camera and audio. PC must be capable of playing video and audio files. We provide you with access to Microsoft 365 Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Teams).

Blended Learning: Learners must be self-motivated and be able to take responsibility for their own self-directed learning, outside the 'Live' Tutor online classes as they complete their blended learning course.

Certification and Assessment

Following successful completion, you will receive a QQI Level 5 component certificate in Spreadsheet Methods (5N1977) from QQI.

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland.  Lir Business Services & Training Centre Ltd is registered with QQI, as a Private Training Provider,  to offer programmes leading to QQI  awards on the National Framework off Qualifications in Ireland (N.F.Q.) 

Learner Progression: Learners who successfully complete this module may use the associated credits towards a relevant Major Award.

Assessment: Project 50% and Examination: Practical 50%

Grading: Pass 50% - 64%, Merit 65% - 79%, Distinction 80% - 100%

A Blended and Online Course with 'Live' Tutor classes, optional Virtual Office Hours and Tutorials.  2 x Workshops over 5 weeks or 8 x Evening Classes plus self-directed learning with online support.

This Programme comprises of 1 module.  The duration of this module is typically 150 hours.  This is a combination of 50 hours of Directed Learning and 100 hours of Self-directed learning.  The 50 hours of Directed Learning takes place in Classroom Attendance and 'Live' Tutor Online Classes.  Self-directed Learning is learner-led, and it includes self-directed study, through Lir eLearning Hub.  This will entail preparation and reflection time on your part.  There are Virtual Office Hours throughout the week also to give you the opportunity of meeting your Tutor online, if you have any queries.


Upon successful completion of a Major award, learners can progress to an award on the next level on the NFQ.  Alternatively, the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) gives learners the opportunity to use their QQI Level 5/6 Major Award to apply through the CAO for a place in the first year of a higher education programme. In some instances, progression is on the basis of specific Level 5 or 6 Major Awards, Learners should check with the higher education institution prior to commencement. Components (Minor Awards), or achievement of less than 120 credits, will not suffice for progression under the HELS.
